The prehistoric lithic assemblages and the habitation on the plateau of Doulka, Middle Kalamas, Thesprotia
Summary:
The objective of this paper has been the study of the chipped stone assemblages that were collected on the plateau of the mountain mass of Doulka during the surface survey of the “Middle Kalamas Archaeology Project” (2011-2015). At the present study, the geographical and the geological context of Thesprotia and especially that of Doulka’s was presented, a report was held about the previous archaeological research projects in the area, and the problematic and the methodology of the study of the chipped stone industry of the archaeological site was expressed. Moreover, the lithic raw materials that had been used on the site were presented, which were grouped on the basis of macroscopic observations in accordance with samples that had been collected in the geological environment of Doulka and have been examined microscopically in the past. Additionally, the description of the chaînes opératoires, the analysis of the tool types and the discussion of the results, as well the comparison with other known sites of Thesprotia and the broader northern Helladic area were made. The character and the role of the site was estimated in the general circulation of lithic raw materials, techniques and goods in the region, as well as its contribution to our knowledge about the prehistoric settlement in northwest Greece.
The study of the chipped stone assemblage from Doulka indicated the intertemporal presence of the prehistoric human on the plateau that starts from the Lower Palaeolithic, continues denser in the Middle Palaeolithic, but also in the Upper Palaeolithic reaching up to the Holocene. Furthermore, broadened the perspectives on the archaeological research in Thesprotia by giving a new dimension to the territory of Homo neanderthalensis, linking his action also to sites situated at an altitude in the region of 500 meters. Finally, the presence of lithic raw materials in Doulka such as the Dramesi chocolate flint and their usage from the Anatomically Modern human reflects choices, connections and locomotion of human groups which performed in relation to the circulation of the lithic raw materials in the wider area, something that the future studies of dated lithic assemblages will allow us to determine.
