The sea waters polllution from petroleum and the legal framework that has been created to prevent larger environmental disputes
Summary:
This dissertation has a dual purpose. First to present the pollution caused to the marine environment by oil and the effects of this pollution on the environment and human. In the second stage to investigate both the older and the current legal framework through which the marine environment is protected. It should be noted that the turning of the legal world at sea and the creation of a legal framework that protects and at the same time punishes the perpetrators, came in the long run , due to many maritime accidents that had occurred and which created oil spills that caused huge pollution, not only in the sea and its organisms, but also in human and the whole environment.
The deepening of the type of protection provided to the marine area and its ecosystems, as well as whether and to what extent an integrated protection is provided in it, is done to understand how important the existence of rules of international law is, which at the same time preventive measures aimed at preventing the partial or even total destruction of marine life.
The content of this work is structured in five parts of which there is a division into first part and second part. The first part consists of three chapters. In the first chapter an analysis is made of what is marine pollution and the separation of the definitions pollution and contamination, how it is caused and who are directly affected by this pollution. Then in the second chapter a reference is made to the biggest accidents with oil spills at sea where they left a history and the means that can be used to remove a quantity of oil from the sea. While the third chapter refers to the impact that these accidents had on the environment and humans and which of them contributed to the creation of an international legal framework where it will protect the marine environment. Then the second part, where it is the most important, is related to all the legislation where it has been created in the long run in order to prevent, protect and punish those who were involved in marine pollution. More specifically, the second part consists of two chapters. Following on from the above, it begins with Chapter 4 which deals with all the contracts that have been created in the past to date to protect the sea from oil pollution, as well as for the compensation that can be given in combination with the imposition of administrative fines. While the 5th and last chapter deals with the impact of marine pollution from oil on the ecosystem in general, the severity of pollution and the destruction of the marine environment and whether the existing legal framework gives the sea the protection it deserves.
