Acute Effect of an Exercise Program of Varying Intensity on Mood State and Cardiac Responses in People with Depression
Summary:
The present study examined acute changes on the mood state and cardiac responses in people with depression after participating in an exercise program of varying intensity. Twelve participants (2 men-10 women, aged 21-56 years) diagnosed with depression completed the self-referenced questionnaire for assessment of their physical activity levels (IPAQ). Then, they participated in two experimental exercise sessions in random counterbalanced order with the 1st being at a low (~50-60% of maximum heart rate: HRMAX) and the 2nd at a moderate-to-vigorous (~70-80% of HRMAX) exercise intensity. Both sessions included resistance exercises with a load corresponding to their body weight. Before and after the cessation of each exercise session, participants completed the attitudes to exercise, the profile of mood state (POMS) and the Borg perceived exertion scales. During the exercise sessions, as well as 5 min before and after the cessation of exercise, their HR was recorded (Polar M430). Two-factor ANOVAs with repeated measures to account for possible differences between the factors exercise intensity (low vs. moderate-to-vigorous), measure (pre vs. post), exercise cycle and time of recovery (minutes 1-5) were applied on the assessed psychometric and HR parameters (α=0.05). Based on the Beck-II scale, participants suffered from mild depression while their physical activity levels were high (~2505 ΜΕΤ-min/week). The results showed that the profile of attitudes towards exercise, POMS and Borg scale were significantly (p<0.05) improved right after each exercise session, whereas the mean HR throughout exercise and the HR rate at recovery showed higher values during the moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise session. The different intensity of the two exercise programs did not show significant changes on either the psychological or the cardiac responses. It can be concluded that one exercise session of low to moderate-to-vigorous intensity has the potential to generate immediate improvements on the mood state of people with mild depression without changes on their cardiac responses.
