Educational use of the online museum applications for Primary School Students through Educational interventions
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis was to exploit the online applications of Greek Museums in primary school students through educational interventions. The aim was to find out changes in both the learning process and the students’ attitudes towards the Museum.
In the first Part, the Museum and the School are being investigated as educational institutions, their characteristics and objectives. Also the possibilities of the cooperation between them through the Curriculum were analyzed.
The important highlights of their collaboration as well as the special role of the teacher in the modern learning context for the development of the students’ views for the Museum were mentioned.
The basic characteristics of educational theories on learning were presented; also the way they apply at the context of School and Museum. Emphasis has been given to the modern approaches of learning adapted by the Museum, which need to be promoted in formal education as well. The role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Education and the learning process in the Greek education system was clarified. The types of ICT applications that are utilized in the physical area of the Museums and the ways they support all the functions were presented as well as the museums’ websites and their online applications. Relevant surveys on museum sites and web applications in Greece and abroad were presented in chronological order.
In the second Part were mentioned the Objective, the Research Tools, the Questions, the Methodological Framework and the Data Collection Tools of the thesis and the selection of the student classes- Grades 4th and 6th in the Primary School.
The available museum applications in Greece were analyzed for their characteristics as well as the selected online museum applications according to the requirements of the research. The research stages and the planning of the interventions were explained.
The research questions of the project were; a) Can the use of museum online applications affects the learning outcomes in a better way than the school textbook? How does the type of museum online material relate to the learning outcomes?
b) How can the interaction between team members in this context influence the learning process?
c) Does the use of museum application influence the students’ view for the Museum; does it reinforce their attitude towards to it?
The intervention was implemented by the researcher with the two classes, grades 4th and 6th in a Primary School of a provincial town. Web applications of Greek Museums were utilized for specific subjects for each class: Art, History and Study of the Environment (2 different subjects) for 4th grade and Geography, Art, Religious and History for 6th grade. Two different groups were created; The Experimental group that used the museum online applications and the Control group which used the school textbook.
The following research tools were used for data collection: Tool 1 - Questionnaire and Cognitive Questionnaire for Experimental and Control Group, Tool 2 - Recording Children’s' Cognitive Response and Task Force for each class, Tool 3-Interview for every student.
The data analysis was quantitative and qualitative.
According to the results, the students in the Experimental Group who have worked with online museum applications managed to improve their performance in almost all cases. Greater improvement was observed in both classes for students who cooperated smoothly in their groups. Also, for the students in the Experimental Group of each class, there was a change in the view of the Museum and their attitudes towards to it.
Although the intervention was limited and short, the experience gained from this research has shown that utilizing museum online applications can improve the learning process in most subjects and also to differentiate students’ attitudes towards the Museum. It also highlighted the issue of collaboration between members of each team as very essential.
It may therefore be suggested to extend this way of teaching and learning in other subjects. This requires, however, the technological support of schools and the training of teachers in order to support and undertake such interventions.
