The National Healthcare System and the influence of interest groups on public health
Summary:
The present bachelor thesis investigates the influence and the role of various aspects of interest groups in the Greek National Healthcare System (ESY) and the health policy. Since the establishment of ESY in 1983, public health actors, such as the medical profession, the public insurance funds and civil servants attempt to ensure and defend the consolidation of their interests by influencing the decision-making accordingly. On the other hand, promoted financial market policies have turned the substantial meaning of healthcare as a public good into health services with aimed at patients as consumers. The adoption of that financial market culture accompanied by the intense activation of private financial interest groups such as the corporate interests of private insurance, the private healthcare services’ providers and the pharmaceutical industry which, in the context of the ESY and public health, seek to expand their power and maximize their profits. Therefore, the question that arises is the suspension of these policies through the participation of citizens in decision-making processes.
