Women and the public sphere
Summary:
The present dissertation is entitled “Women and the public sphere” and deals with the participation of women in politics and public administration, and how it has evolved during recent years.

In particular, the present work raises as a central issue the limited number of women in positions of power in the political scene, with emphasis on their minority participation in the Greek Parliament, in the Greek Government and in the Local Government. This data emerges from the relevant statistics of recent years, as well as from corresponding information obtained from the Greek Parliament and the Ministry of Interior.

Furthermore, the purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate the participation of women in the labor market in general, to analyze their shrinking participation in politics, considering the relevant legislation, and to make clear the need to strengthen female participation.

It is worth noting the strong concern about the gap between men and women regarding the possibility of being elected to Parliament and to positions of power, which still exists to this day.

More specifically, there will be the necessary historical review of the position of women starting from the analysis of Ancient Greece, until the conquest of the political rights of Greek women. Next, we will observe the evolution of women’s employment in Greece in general, and the social discrimination that is developed in the workplace. We will also investigate the elements of women’s entrepreneurship in the private sector and comment on women’s leadership in the Greek public administration, with reference to the relevant institutional framework for their civil rights. Finally, the percentages of participation of Greek women in the Greek Parliament – in correspondence with those in the European Parliament for the period 2019-2024 – in the Greek Governments over time, as well as in the Local Government will be quoted.
