Summary:
This dissertation follows the creation and development of the National Radio Foundation’s magazine ‘’Weekly Program’’ and then ‘’Radio Times’’, from its first publication in 1939 until its change of character in 1955. This publication was the main means of advertising program of the state radio of Greece during the first years of its operation and quickly received the features of a magazine of various subjects, hoping to be a reading for all members of a family. For the writing of the work, a detailed documentation of the contents of the magazine was made in the ERT Archive with the aim of outlining the history and physiognomy of the state radio until the mid-1950s. In the first chapter, with the help of the existing bibliography, a brief look back at the establishment and development of state radio in Greece in order to make clear the configuration of the state radio broadcasting institution. The second chapter presents the corresponding publication of the state body of Great Britain, the Radio Times, which was an example to imitate the Greek edition. The third chapter is divided into four subchapters, each of which is dedicated to the respective circulation sub-periods of the ‘’Radio Times’’. These subchapters present in detail the appearance, the material, the contents (articles, photographs, advertisements) of the publication from 1939 to 1955. Finally, the fourth chapter examines the way in which the official state rhetoric regarding the political and social developments of the 1940s and 1950s through the pages of the ‘’Radio Times’’. In particular, two sub-chapters examine the way in which the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas was projected during the last two years, the issue of the "child mass" and the "child guard" that occupied the Greek public opinion during the Civil War and was strongly promoted through the pages of a radio publication of various subjects such as the ‘’Radio Times’’.
