Employing Digital Storytelling for the production of written narrative discourse within the context of the Modern Greek Literature subject in Junior High School
Summary:
The purpose of this research is to study the results obtained by the use of Digital Storytelling in the Modern Greek Literature of Junior High School 1st grade course. In particular, the research focuses on the role of collaborative Digital Storytelling aiming at enhancing learning motivation, gaining the students' impressions of digital storytelling and making an impact of the above method on students' written narrative speech production.

The term "learning motivation" refers to the mobilization process that activates students to be actively involved in the learning process. This mobilization appears when students get involved in activities that match their experiences and interests, stimulate their interest and attention and demonstrate the importance and value of learning content, while their successful completion brings them confidence. The closed-ended questionnaires completed by the students before and after the teaching intervention tested the effect of the digital storytelling activity on two components of the learning motivation, the "Task Value" and the "Self-Efficacy".

With the qualitative method of thematic analysis, the impressions of the students were obtained from the questionnaires answered by the students, after the didactic intervention. Thus three thematic categories emerged from their answers: "Storybird Dealing", "Storybird & Collaboration" and "Storybird & Writing Production".

The quality of the written narrative speech of the students' digital stories was evaluated based on the graded rubric proposed by the Ministry of Education for the evaluation of the written narrative speech and separately evaluates the performance in the three components of a narrative, its content, its structure and organization and the style and use of language.

The action research, which was carried out in real life, in the classroom, and lasted six teaching hours, involved a group of 23 first grade Junior High School students, who created digital fairy tales with "storybird", the online tool of digital storytelling. From the analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data collected from the completion of questionnaires before and after the intervention and the produced digital stories of the participants, there was an increase in learning motivation, an expression of positive impressions along with a remarkable production of digital stories. In conclusion, the overall results of the present study show that digital storytelling can be useful and effective teaching method.
