Summary:
The aim of this senior thesis is the estimation of the flood hazard for the drainage basin of Acheron River, Epirus, Greece. The first part includes the fundamental geo-logical information (in general) that was necessary for the prosecution of this work, i.e. information regarding drainage networks and floods, as well as Greece’s geotec-tonic structure in relationship to the study area.
The second part consists of several pieces of fundamental information regarding the drainage basin of Acheron. The said information concerns the area’s history, ecol-ogy, land cover, climatic regime and, of course, geology. Alongside the aforemen-tioned, the main mythological information is quoted, based on texts and narrations of ancient wri¬ters (e.g. Homer, Lucian, Hesiod), as well as newer approaches/exegeses by several authors and testimonies from several people residing in the villages of Acher-on, whereas newer narrations, which were shared to the writer by residents of several villages, are also quoted. At the same time, an attempt to connect the my¬thological narrations with the physiographical and geological structure of the broader area was made.
The third part includes the main geomorphological and physiographical features of the drainage basin of Acheron. The latter were defined through bibliographical refer-ences, which are yet very scarce for the area, as well as measurements through the programs ArcMap and Google Earth Pro and through in situ field observations. The said data are presented both for the drainage basin as a total and for each main branch (Acheron, Mavropotamos, Goumelitikon Stream, Thalassoumenon Stream, Voukelas Torrent, Souliotikon Stream, Kokytos, Vouvos, Kakkavos, Periflegethon, Chochla River and Glyfas) individually.
The final and main part of this work regards the estimation of the flood risk for the drainage basin of Acheron. Studies and publications about the flood hazard in several areas and the means of its estimation were i¬nitially studied. The flood hazard for the study area was estimated through the geological and geomorphological characteristics of the area and through in situ observations and testimonies from the locals.
In the fifth and final part, all the utilised bibliographical references are quoted. Given that several texts (scientific journal articles, books etc.) concerning flood haz-ard evaluation methods were used, some of which are not mentioned within the essay, all of them are quoted in the end. Therefore, in the end of this thesis, both the biblio-graphical references regarding floods in gene¬ral and the information about Acheron (including ancient texts) are quoted.
