Summary:
Learning difficulties constitute a wide range of obstacles that students face and create significant problems as they lead to hindrance of their learning. A lot of research has been done nowadays and has contributed to the recognition of this wide range of difficulties as well as the ways to diagnose and treat them. Moreover, educational interventions were assisted to be developed that are helpful for students to overcome their problems. Additionally, it is worth noting that students are treated by the educational system in a different way. However, there are still some issues which seem to have more to do with the schools of the province than the schools of the big cities.
Thus, the purpose of this work is the investigation of the views and experiences teachers of preschool and early school education regarding the appearance and way of dealing of children who experience difficulties in learning in general education schools in Athens and Kefallonia.
In order to achieve the goal of this paper, qualitative research was conducted by the using semi-structured interviews. The research sample consisted of eight teachers (three men and five women) who had experience in both schools in Kefallonia and Athens. The findings of the research showed that there are serious problems in the way of dealing with children with learning difficulties in schools, mainly in the province. The main obstacle seems to be the parents, possibly because they have a different way of life and their experiences that are not helpful for them to accept that their children when have learning difficulties and in many cases are not able to provide the help needed for children.
