The effects of the "Samina" shipreck on the lives of survivors and their families
Summary:
The aim of this study is to investigate the personal experience of one collectively traumatic event and its effect on the lives of survivors but also on the lives of family members. The research questions are about memory and the meaning of experience, bio-psycho-social effects, mechanisms and ways of crisis management, family dynamics, personal and social relationships of the person who has experienced the shipwreck, indirectly or directly. Of research interest is also the relationship of the experience of the shipwreck with the personal and spiritual development of the individual. The material under analysis consists of 20 semi-structured interviews of shipwrecked of ‘Samina’ and 17 semi-structured interviews of relatives. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was chosen as the most appropriate methodology for processing data, giving ‘voice’ to individual experience and deepening into knowledge. Indicatively, main themes that emerged and include multiple themes and subthemes are ‘Management of Experience’, ‘Trauma’, ‘Chronic Impacts’, ‘Post-traumatic development’, ‘Sharing’ and ‘Meaning of Experience’. Qualitative data that obtained from interviews of the shipwrecked and their relatives are combined with the existing literature on psycho-social, emotional and behavioral manifestations during and after a catastrophic event. Discussion of the results of analysis is carried out on the basis of existing research data and theoretical framework, enriched with the scientific ‘look’ of the material at the dyadic level. Finally, specific and targeted suggestions for counseling interventions arising from deeply grounded to traumatic qualities themes, are presented.
