Summary:
Our impulse to acquire new knowledge, to improve, and to evolve is a fundamental aspect of human nature. The same principle can be applied to the development of musical instruments. This study examines the transition from the three-stringed to the four-stringed bouzouki through the works of performer and composer Manolis Hiotis, and specifically through a case study of the song «Εσύ ‘σαι η αιτία που υποφέρω» (Greek: “You Are the Reason For my Suffering”). The study examines three different versions of this particular song using recorded material from the extant discography. The literature review focuses on the social, historical, political, and cultural aspects of the post-war period that affected the advancement of the bouzouki. The aim of this study was to promote the bouzouki as an instrument worthy of study, and to show its evolution from its three-stringed variant to its four-stringed variant through the three versions of the aforementioned song. The topic is approached both theoretically and practically showing the organological progression from the three-stringed to the four-stringed bouzouki.
