Muscle stiffness and elasticity of adolescent athletes across different sports
Summary:
The concepts of stiffness and elasticity in sports include the concepts of absorption and performance when performing a variety of sports skills, in a way that athletic performance is improved or maintained, but also to ensure prevention of injury. Jumping activities in particular seem to contribute also to the "economy" of sports, as they improve the absorption and efficiency of energy through the stress-shortening cycle and neuromuscular function.
The aim of this study was to study the differences in athletic performance of 3 jumping activities, in stiffness and in elasticity of the lower extremities between different sports and athletes of different sexes. The aim was to explain the resulting differences through the different biomechanics of these sports, but also the differences between the participating adolescent boys / girls, through any anatomical differences or differences in the neuromuscular function between the two sexes.
Selected athletes of pre-adolescent and adolescent age (n = 233) from six different sports (alpine skiing, fencing, handball, table tennis, tennis, volleyball) were used for this study. The performance and stiffness of the lower limbs in dynamic vertical jump movements was measured through the Optojump Next opto-electric system, based on measurements of contact time, flight time and body mass of the athlete and the use of mathematical equations.
The differences noted seem to be due to the specificity of the biomechanics of each sport (type of training). Moreover, the difference of values between sexes was statistically significant in some of the sports studied. Therefore, it seems that both studied parameters help to determine the jump performance and the stiffness of the lower extremities.
