Comparison of instrumental teaching between western european classical music and greek folk - traditional music, focusing on non-formal learning practices and especially on the concept of "playing by ear".
Summary:
The present study examines the issue of the use of informal learning based on the
comparison, in terms of the application of its practices, of two different educational frameworks. More specifically, that of Western European classical music and that of the Greek folk music tradition. The comparative examination of the matter revealed conclusions that can be useful to teachers of both contexts, improving the quality of their teaching choices, since practices such as "playing with the ear" and improvisation are associated with listening skills and, more generally, cultivation of the musical ear.
The data collection was conducted with the aid of the semi-structured interview during the spring of 2020. The sample consisted of eight (8) teachers of musical instruments. That is, two (2) groups of teachers were formed; four from one framework and four from the other respectively. Through their narratives about their use of non-formal learning, an attempt was made to investigate the way in which it is applied, the interpretive and educational conditions, as well as the musical characteristics of the two genres that influence this application. Finally, their personal opinion was expressed regarding the position and effectiveness of these practices in the context of their course.
The results of the research have shown that playing by ear and improvisation are
fundamental practices for the teaching of Greek traditional instruments and an integral part of it. The necessity of their use derives from the special conditions and the musical characteristics of this genre. On the other hand, the relatively limited and often framed use of such practices by teachers of Western classical music results from a variety of factors that are related to the established standard of teaching of this music and in parallel with the peculiarities that are similarly shaped by its own stylistic features.
Finally, all participants in the research were observed to treat informal learning as a useful and effective element in students' musical development, encouraging them to come into contact with acoustic playing and improvised performance of music. In the last chapter of this paper, some suggestions for future research are presented that would contribute to the further investigation of the issue of non-formal learning practices.
