Prevention of smoking in students with experiential - interactive learning programs
Summary:
Smoking is a main public health problem and a leading cause of premature morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Implementing preventive anti-smoking programs in schools is of primary importance in controlling the smoking epidemic. Smoking prevention programs are divided into traditional, informative and newer ones, based on the recognition of social influences and the development of personal skills, which seem to be more effective. Experiential learning enhances the effectiveness of the educational process, however the experience of experiential smoking prevention programs is very limited. We designed and implemented an experiential smoking prevention program for adolescent students, incorporating many of the features of the newest and most effective programs, which we presented based on the principles and methodology of experiential learning. In addition, we included as an innovative element the interdisciplinary approach, through the extraction of educational material from the ancient Greek literature and modern literature. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the experiential smoking prevention program that we implemented, in improving knowledge, strengthening anti-smoking attitudes and turning into a more negative adolescent intention to smoke. Method We implemented our intervention to students of 5 Middle Schools in neighboring municipalities of Attica during the academic year 2016-17. We studied with self-report questionnaires, the parameters knowledge, attitudes, intention to smoke, in two groups of 351 students, 181 (51.6%) intervention group and 170 (48.4%) control and evaluated their change 3 months later. In shaping our study, we used the theoretical framework of the Theory of Reasoned Behavior (TRA). Results The findings of the analysis showed in the intervention group a significant improvement in the knowledge of the effects of smoking (before intervention: 5.6 ± 2.1, vs: 7.7 ± 1.7, p <0.001), strengthening of anti-smoking attitudes (before intervention: 5.3 ± 2.7, vs: .7.1 ± 2.1 p-value <0.001) and more negative smoking intention (pre-intervention: 94.4% vs 81.2%, p <0.001) compared to the control group at follow-up of 3 months. Conclusion The newest smoking prevention programs, based on the principles of experiential learning and the utilization of excerpts from the ancient and modern Greek literature, seem to have a significant effect on improving knowledge, strengthening anti-smoking attitudes and shaping negative smoking intentions to high School students. Consequently, based on the Theory of Reasoned Behavior, they can also work effectively in reducing tobacco use by adolescent students.
