Orthorexia and Eating Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Review
Summary:
Introduction: In recent years a new healthy pathological eating behavior has emerged and it’s called orthorexia. People with orthorexia have a pathological obsession with pure organic products and exclude from their diet foods that they consider to be contaminated with insecticides, pesticides and additives in food processing and production. This behavior leads to significant dietary restrictions and to eating disorders. It is observed that the symptoms of orthorexia match those with eating disorders. The purpose of this study is to investigate a possible association between orthorexia and eating disorders.

Method: A systematic review of the literature published in PubMed, PsycInfo and Google Scholar and evaluated with the Newcastle Ottawa scale.

Results: Our research resulted in 37 studies. Almost all studies show an association between orthorexia and eating disorders. We cannot draw conclusions by attributing a cause-and-effect relationship because the results in the research were obtained by cross-section analysis. There are many confusing factors such as gender, BMI, level of education, which have not been adequately studied.

Conclusion: Health scientists and those working with adolescents and young adults should also consider their eating behavior because obsession with healthy eating and dieting may be associated with eating disorders.
