A study on the subtitling process of TED Talks as well as the translation techniques used within the language pair French to Greek

The purpose of this dissertation was to record and study the subtitling act and the various strategies employed by the volunteer subtitlers of the TED platform. In this context, the parallel corpora were studied with the aim of understanding the translation techniques used in the TED talks but also the preservation and transfer of elements of culture. At the same time, the broader techniques of rendering translational phenomena were recorded through the comparison of these findings. The examples presented and analyzed in this paper, are within the linguistic combination: French-Greek. The primary sources that were used, were found in the TED platform and included speeches in French as a source language, subtitled in Greek. A total number of 60 videos lasting a total of eleven hours, forty-eight minutes and fourteen seconds were collected. Subsequently, two corpora were formed for the aforementioned language pair, with a volume of 105,682 words for the first language and 86,298 words for the second one. The noticeable difference in the number of words between the French corpus and the Greek corpus of texts is based on the fact that each language has its peculiarities. More specifically, the French language includes oral communication and the Greek language is used for the translated subtitles. As previously mentioned, the two languages are different. That explains why the transfer - from French to Greek - in the form of subtitles is a difficult process. Furthermore, the methodological parameters and the demarcation of the theoretical framework are mentioned. Moreover, after all the findings have been recorded, they have been studied in three sub-axes: on a linguistic level, in the adaptation of the oral communication into subtitles, and finally in the effort - correspondence of the socio-cultural peculiarities of the French language to the target language, meaning in Greek.
