Translated title:
The portrait of the prostitute and urban values: translating the naturalistic novella "Marthe: L'histoire d'une fille" by J.-K. Huysmans
Summary:
In this paper, we attempted the transaltion of the first five chapters of the french naturalistic novella "Marthe: L'histoire d'une fille" by J. K. Huysmans (1876). Through this translation, we are examining the perception of female prostitution in France and late 19th century Paris in particular.
Furthermore, we are looking into Huysmans' writing style through this early work of his. We wanted to highlight the narrative style and mostly the use of the free indirect speech, which had been a catalyst for the literary movement of naturalism.
Finally, this paper is focusing on analyzing the choices made by the translator regarding the pragmatics of the text, the specilized vocabulary and the style of the narration.
