Concepts of Statistics and Probability Theory in Education using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
Summary:
The purpose of this dissertation is to determine if and to what extent there is an improvement in the understanding of the concepts of Statistics and Probability Theory if ICT is applied in the teaching of Statistics at the University. More specifically, this dissertation examines the improvement of the understanding of the Concepts of Statistics and Probability Theory in Higher Education and especially in Departments of Schools of Economics and Management with the use of specialized software applications. "Before and after" with control groups was chosen as the most appropriate research method. This method is the most appropriate, because the aim is to 'measure' the improvement of the understanding of statistical and probability theory concepts by the students, most of whom have been taught in secondary education, ie to capture the difference in the understanding of these concepts before and after the didactic intervention with the use of specialized software. In the research approach of the present research, it was determined as a sample, the majority of students of a Department of a Greek University, who attended in a specific academic semester a mandatory introductory course in Statistics. The experimental group and the control group were well defined. Pre-tests were recorded to determine the level of understanding of each student at the beginning of the semester in which the teaching took place. Separate and specialized software applications were developed for the teaching of Statistics and Probability concepts and existing software applications were used. The set of all these applications covers most of the outline of an introductory course in Statistics in Schools of Management and Economics. The experimental group was taught the basic concepts of Statistics and Probability Theory using specialized software applications while the control group was taught the traditional teaching method in the laboratory. Post-tests were recorded at the end of the semester, in order to determine the improvement, ie the difference between the meta-measurement and the pre-measurement of each student. Then a statistical analysis was performed and the research hypotheses for the extraction of results were checked, the results for the extraction of findings were evaluated and finally identified those points on which future extensions of the research can be based.
