Summary:
Introduction : Brachial plexus block in order to anaesthetize upper limb has been in use over one hundred years. Nerve stimulation in combination with anatomical landmarks has been the “gold standard” blockade of nerves in the last four decades. Regional anesthesia today is an integral part of the pediatric anesthetic care. The main reason for this is the application of ultrasound guidance in regional anesthesia the last two decades.
Objectives: The purpose of this review is to analyze all the data regarding brachial plexus block in children.
Methods: In the first part the anatomy of the brachial plexus and the anatomy of the different approaches in brachial plexus blockade is described. For each approach the different techniques as nerve stimulation, anatomical landmarks and ultrasound guidance is described and all the advantages, limits and disadvantages of each of these approaches are described and analysed. The second part is focused in local anesthetics drugs and adjuvants that are used in brachial plexus blockade in children. The techniques and drugs for brachial plexus block in children as the anatomical and physiological differences is compared with adults.
Results: Brachial plexus block is the most effective analgesia and anesthesia procedure for the upper extremity surgeries in pediatric patients.
