Adapting a Literary Text into a Play: Dramatization of Penelope Delta's "Tale with No Name"
Summary:
The present study falls under the scope of the Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) and aims to analyze the transposition of a literary text into a dramatic work. The methodology followed involves, at first, a literature review to provide clarifications on the concept of dramatization, to highlight its importance as a theatrical technique in the context of education and to investigate and present the transposition process. Since the study focuses on the dramatization of texts for underage audiences, the second stage comprises a comparative analysis of a literary work addressed to children and its corresponding dramatization. More specifically, Penelope Delta's play "A Tale with No Name", dramatized independently by T. Tzamargias and V. Raptopoulos in 2010, was selected as the subject of the case study. The results from the comparison of these two works confirm the theoretical framework that encompasses the morphological, structural and stylistic changes a narrative work undergoes in its transformation into a theatrical play. The study concludes with the beneficial effect of drama in education and dramatization’s significance as a pedagogical method, suggesting further research is needed to explore all its potential applications in the classroom.
