Title: Asthma controller therapy in preschool children and behavioral disorders. Cross –sectional study
Summary:
Objective: Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are widely used as prophylactic treatment for preschool asthma. Behavioral disorders have been reported as side effects of this treatment. The addition of an inhaled long-acting β2 agonist (LABA) to ICS therapy as a step up therapy in school-age children has been safely used. Methods: Children with asthma 3- to 6-years and treated with ICS or a combination of ICS / LABA provided they have not had another chronic disease or had not received oral cortisone in the last month, were assessed for behavioral problems via the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) as well as the Asthma Control Test (ACT) questionnaire, in order to compare the behavioral disorders of patients on ICS / LABA with those receiving ICS alone. Results: The study included a total of 68children, 36 (52.9%) boys and 32 (47.1%) girls. 53 (77.9%) were on treatment with fluticasone / salmeterol and 15 (22.1%) were on monotherapy with fluticasone with a mean (± SD) duration of this treatment 3.99 ± 2.5months. There was no statistically significant difference in the total SDQ score between the two groups (SDQ mean total score for combination group: 10.08, ICS group: 9.67, p = 0.96). Good asthma control based on the ACT score was 86.3% in the seretide group (N = 44) and 93.3% in the flixotide group (N = 14) Conclusions: In a sample of preschool children on asthma treatment, ICS / LABA combination therapy vs.ICS therapy did not appear to be associated with behavioral disorders
