Teaching Science with analogies
Summary:
Science teachers frequently use analogies when explaining fundamentally important concepts in order to enhance learning by building conceptual bridges between old and new knowledge. In Biology, analogies are used to explain the cells of which organisms are composed. An analogy of Physics concerns the motion of electrons around the nucleus of each atom. An example in which analogies are used in Chemistry is for the function of enzymes based on the 'key and lock' theory. In Geology, the contribution of analogies to the history of the Earth is very important as it is a subject completely unknown to students. Thus, an analogy with a 24 hour clock was used to explain it.
