Gender stereotypes through content analysis in the textbook of Modern Greek Language of the second grade of Gymnasium
Summary:
This paper discusses the prevalence and promotion of gender stereotypes in the current textbooks of the Modern Greek Language of the 2nd Grade of Gymnasium. The purpose of the research is to investigate the projection and perpetuation of gender stereotypes and inequalities in these textbooks, including the student workbook. The individual objectives of the research focus on informing and sensitizing the reading public regarding gender stereotypes and the way gender is presented in the modern era in the school environment. The main part of the paper attempts to approach the subject in a theoretical way and also give a historical review of all existing research to date. The method used is the qualitative analysis of content at the macro level in combination with the interpretive approach. The categories of analysis are summarized in the presentation of gender in stereotypically traditional or non-traditional roles and in the promotion of gender equality. The analysis highlights the strong presentation of gender in stereotypically traditional gender roles and with stereotypical gender characteristics by a majority, although some points of promotion of gender equality are identified. In conclusion, there is a need to modernize school textbooks so as to offer students both modern media and incentives to become more aware of gender inequalities and stereotypes that may affect the development of their identity. Finally, some proposals are presented to enhance the promotion of gender issues in the textbooks of the Modern Greek Language of the 2nd Grade of Gymnasium, in order to raise awareness and students' concerns about them, in a way harmonized with modern social reality.
