Summary:
Exhaustion in sports is an important subject to research as well
is inextricably linked to maintaining a person's mental health.
In recent years many scholars (Dale and Weinberg, Goodger, Caccese,
Mayerberg et al.) Focused their research on athletes and especially coaches as well
the emotional and physical stress of the latter is amenable to
performance of athletes.
The concept of burnout with the broader meaning of the term is mentioned
in a multidimensional syndrome with the main characteristic being the emotional
exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal success (Maslach)
and seems to have extensive reference on a psychological and sociological level.
The main characteristics of the professions where it is observed are the stressful ones
periods and extensive interpersonal relationships.
It is important to place burnout in the sports environment at
framework of a cognitive-emotional model (Smith) as well as outsiders
stressors that contribute to it (Fletcher and Fletcher).
The individual factors of burnout are those that
include demographics, personality and cognitive assessment and
are considered: age, work experience, gender, motivation, coaching
behavior and personality, social support, justice and
commitment. Situational factors are those that describe organizational and
environmental variables and are considered: sport and form of employment.
The symptoms of burnout can be either psychological
or normal. Their valid observation can lead to timely
detection of possible depletion and consequently in its timely treatment. THE
Kahill groups these symptoms into four categories: physical, and
emotional, behavioral and interpersonal and summarizes the negatives
attitudes that develop towards clients, work, ourselves and in general
the life.
Exhaustion in sports is a fact as psychologists argue
that sports situations have common features identified in
bibliography with burnout. Exhaustion is quite relevant to him
sports as it results in abandonment / withdrawal from participation
(Pargman).
Neutralization in sports psychology mainly concerns athletes and
teachers / coaches. In fact, the coaches seem to be primary
Exhausted candidates as they are more committed / invested, strive for
excellence and often compared to what they give they get very little as
in return. The stress they experience affects both the physical and the
their mental health and its prevention is of utmost importance.
Scientists in the study of psychology aim at development
theoretical models. Fletcher and colleagues developed a metamodel of stress, emotion, and performance on theoretical relationships
between key processes, coordinators and consequences of a stress process, the
which is divided into three stages: the adaptation of person / environment, the
emotion / performance adjustment and coping / overall effect.
While stress is recognized in the lives of coaches, research is focused
in the causes. The demands experienced by modern coaches come mainly from
from interactions with others, from guidance tasks and
results. To coaches of a higher level of competitive sports
it turned out that organizational stressors are mainly their requirements
sports organizations in which they operate.
Also important is the evaluation of the requirements by the coaches and
how they respond to them. There are four types of stress in the literature
response categories: cognitive, emotional, physiological and
behavioral. Stress clearly has an effect on their well-being / performance
coaches.
Regarding the coping process and the strategies followed, the
coaches in sports contexts behave strategically to
deal with their stress experiences. Their strategies can
be classified as problem-focused or emotion-focused.
In addition, it makes sense for all coaches not to respond to stress with him
same way. The structure of the personality, the cruelty and his is important
stress that may characterize it. Strong protective factor for them
coaches recognized social support. Other factors are also
age, experience and relationship with the head coach.
Finally due to the remarkable flourishing of basketball in recent decades and its
pressure for victory according to surveys conducted show that coaches
basketball show higher levels of burnout compared to
coaches of other sports
