Stratigraphy of Cretaceous deposits of the Hellenides
Summary:
The aim of this dissertation is the bibliographic research on the stratigraphy of Cretaceous deposits in geotectonic units of the Hellenides.
The Hellenides arise from the evolution of the Tethys and its margins and are divided into palaeogeographic areas. They are divided into internal Hellenides whose deformation was done before the Cenozoic and external Hellenides that deformed from the Eocene onwards (Papanikolaou, 1986).
In the Lower Cretaceous , at the external Hellenides, there are either neritic facies with foraminifera and algae or pelagic facies with Calpionellidae and Radiolaria but also mixed facies are observed. While in the Upper Cretaceous there are either neritic and reef facies with foraminifera, algae and rudists while in the pelagic facies are observed mainly Globotruncanidae (Karakitsios, 2001).
The end of the Cretaceous is characterized by Eustatism - a great withdrawal of the sea on a global scale - and by the cooling of the climate (Karakitsios, 2001).
The units studied in the present dissertation are Paxos unit, Ionian unit, Tripolis unit, Pindos unit, Parnassos unit and Western Thessaly-Beotia unit.
These units have already been studied by Renz (1955), Celet (1962), Papanikolaou (1986), Nikolaou (1986), Lekkas (1987, 1990), Carras (1995), Rigakis (1999) , Zambetaki-Lekka (2006) and many more as will be mentioned below.
