The role and importance of communication in environmental matters: The WWF's "Fish Forward” project example
Summary:
This thesis was prepared in the framework of the postgraduate program entitled "Digital Communication Media and Interaction Environments" of the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the aim of evaluating the role and the importance of communication in environmental issues. For the research, the example of the WWF European project entitled "Fish Forward" is used, a project on overfishing and its economic impact in developing countries, which took place in two phases: the period 2015-2017 (Fish Forward 1) and the period 2018-2020 (Fish Forward 2). In addition, the following aspects are analyzed: the communication of the action in each country, the obstacles that arose, the mistakes that were made and the solutions found for the better dissemination of the message in Greece, while at the same time a comparison is made with the other European countries that participated in the program.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ways the message is communicated to Greek consumers, the points of action that made communication difficult and the way the action and the message were adapted to the needs of the Greek public. The method followed is: 1. study of the action, 2. sending questionnaires or conducting interviews with the WWF offices of the other countries that ran participated in the corresponding action.
Through this process, conclusions are drawn about the usefulness of the correct communication in an environmental project and the ways to improve it so that the message is understandable and reaches a larger part of the population. It explores whether environmental issues are perceived differently by different cultures and how this diversity is approached on a case-by-case basis by each branch of the same NGO around the world.
The statements and the conclusions in this paper, do not represent the positions of the environmental organization WWF and express only the views of the author as results from the analysis above.
