"The use of the humanoid robot NAO, as a tool for a differentiated teaching to Primary school students"
Summary:
Recently, more and more research has referred to humanoid robots as supportive teaching materials and tools for implementing a differentiated teaching of a variety of educational topics. Many studies demonstrate the potential of social robots to enhance academic or socio-emotional skills, engage children in activities, and develop learning through innovative applications. At the same time, there is a correlation between the interest in the application of new technological means (use of robots) in school with the existing technological knowledge. This study aims to explore the potential of SoftBank Robotics social robot NAO, to assume the role of a teacher assistant and to be used for supportive teaching in the classroom. For this purpose, two educational scenarios were created based on different cognitive content. The first was on the topic of "Ecology-Environment" (title: How2beAnEcoist) and the second was on the topic of "Dance and Gymnastics" (title: Dance the NAO Style) on the Choregraphe software platform for the NAO. Then, for each educational scenario, there was a practical application. The interventions took place in a Primary School with a total of 53 students aged 7-11 years and in a Dance School with 14 students aged 5,5-12 years. The tools used to collect data were video observation, questionnaires as well as a self-assessment rubric of the overall experience. The results indicate a high participation of students in the activities with the NAO, desire to use it in other courses and a significant interest in its capabilities. In addition, new knowledge was acquired based on the results of cognitive content. In “How2beAnEcoist” the younger age group responded more accurately to the tests and questions for the three subjects (Recycling, Water, Electricity) compared to the older age group. In the musical-motor activity “Dance the NAO Style” the exact opposite were observed.
