Summary:
The aim of this doctoral research is to investigate two contemporary social
phenomena, multiculturalism and school bullying in relation to each other and the factors
that link them. In this context, the phenomena are studied on a theoretical level utilizing
existing Greek and foreign literature, followed by research at a particular school, with
participating pupils involved in the phenomenon of racism school bullying.
Multiculturalism is a phenomenon that relates to the coexistence of people from
different cultural backgrounds and their interaction within society. It is a phenomenon
that is timeless, as it is observed in all eras, with different social conditions and
extensions. Nowadays, many human societies are multicultural, due to various factors,
such as the existence of minorities, immigration and movement of refugee waves from
war zones. As a matter of fact, multiculturalism is also encountered within the school
community, creating new challenges for modern intercultural education.
Another phenomenon that is observed in modern societies with an extremely high
intensity is the phenomenon of school bullying, the manifestation of various forms of
bullying by students towards their peers, which aims to harm and victimize them. School
bullying is a phenomenon that is linked to a variety of factors, the most important of
which are social, referring to the family, school and social pathogenesis, and the
consequences it can cause are numerous and serious, not only for the victims but and for
all students.
Nowadays, multiculturalism constitutes one of the factors that cause conflicts
between people from different cultural backgrounds. There are many manifestations of
racist behavior in modern societies, which in many cases are particularly violent and have
serious consequences. Thus, given the fact that the school is a miniature of society and is
also multicultural, racism is manifested within the school community in the form of
bullying behavior, which is difficult to manage and important to deal with through the
cooperation of all, teachers, principals, parents and students.
The present research confirmed the link between school bullying and
multiculturalism, and highlighted the problems of modern intercultural education in a
multicultural school. Through its findings, we look forward to finding solutions to these
problems and to forming a democratic multicultural school.
