Exploring the Quality of Life of adults with Intellectual Disability through the prism of Occupational Justice
Summary:
The experiences of occupational participation as well as the perceptions and attitudes of adults with Intellectual Disability were explored through the lens of Occupational Justice model aiming to shape and develop a theory – model of quality of life based on their daily occupations.

A qualitative study of thirteen adults with Intellectual Disability (N=13), nine men and four women. A semi-structured interview was constructed and administered based on Model of Human Occupation, for exploring occupational experiences – perceptions of quality of life; and the Occupational Justice model for exploring social injustices regarding occupational participation. The interviews were processed with QSR NVivo 8 according to content analysis research methodology.

An Occupational Quality of Life model has been formed and is described by a core dimension of everyday occupations which consists of three main dimensions (social, mental - physical and material well-being). The main indicator of quality of life was the recreational occupations of social participation, while at the same time social - environmental factors of occupational deprivation, marginalization, imbalance and alienation were identified. As specific occupations of promoting and improving the quality of life social recreational activities, physical activity and sports, art, assistive technology and vocational training. At the same time the importance of promoting and supporting the occupational rights of people with intellectual disability to employment, independent living and sexual expression were highlighted.

The Occupational Quality of Life is a well-structured conceptual framework of quality of life for people with Intellectual Disability, however, further research is needed for developing assessment instruments and specialized Occupational Therapy interventions derived from its theoretical basis in order to promote quality of life and social inclusion.
