THE ELEMENT OF WATER IN THE MODERN PICTUREBOOK
Summary:
Water plays an important role in literature and especially in that aimed at children and young people. This approach starts from the fact that water is considered an essential element for the birth and development of all living organisms and consequently for the evolution of civilization. The water element, more than any other element, has acquired a symbolic character and has been associated with moral values and ideals. Moreover, with a timeless approach to literature, it appears that water, in any form, is a source of life and is associated with power, authority, but also death. In this context, in the present work, a type of literature emerges, which mainly concerns children, and in which the power of the image is highlighted. It is the picture book, a distinct literary genre, which focuses on the value and dynamics of the image in relation to the text, in order to transmit meanings, values and ideas to the readers. In the present work, four picture books of translated literature are approached, starting from Bachelard's phenomenology for water, as well as some psychoanalytic interpretations. Specifically, these are Marc Martin's "River", Grahame Baker-Smith's "Rain Rhythm", Clare Helen Welsh and Ashling Lindsay's "Wave" and Nina Laden and Castrillon Melissa's "Yellow Kayak". The purpose of this work is to highlight the importance of water as an element that implies the insidious thoughts and feelings of each hero..
