Religious Education as a compulsory subject in the modern Greek school: positions and contrapositions
Summary:
The focal hypothesis of this bibliographic review is that there is common ground to be found in the opposing arguments in regards with the judicial, pedagogical and theological aspects of Religious Education (R.E.) in Greece. Based on the above, it is deduced that common ground can only be found in R.E being mandatory and significant for the Greek school syllabus, as far as the judicial and pedagogical aspects are concerned. Furthermore, many rifts are noted that make matters worse for the existence of a modern R.E. subject in Greek society. On the other hand, there is general harmony of viewpoints on the theological aspects of R.E., but a distinction of R.E. in public schools from the concept of catechism in churches is imperative.
