Summary:
The subject of this paper is the study of the black-figure lekythoi of the donation of Mrs. Eleni Martinou to the Museum of Archeology and History of Art of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The lekythoi are described in detail and are examined in terms of shape and iconography, while being attributed to certain painters and connected to the production of certain pottery workshops. Also, they are placed within chronological periods. The white-ground pattern lekythoi, the red-ground pattern lekythoi and the black-glaze lekyhtoi are examined separately. Finally, some sites on the Greek region are presented, where black-figure lekythoi have been found, and some thoughts on the use of these vessels in antiquity are expressed, concerning both their funerary aspect and their use in daily life.
