Benthic community and ecological quality analysis of Messolonghi lagoon
Summary:
Sediment samples were collected from six stations in January and July of 2013 from Messolonghi lagoon, Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. The samples were analyzed so the basic characteristics of the macrobenthic fauna communities could be studied. Environmental parameters were also measured in the water column as well as in the sediment. Phytobenthic mass from each sample was taxonomically identified and weighted. The central Messolonghi lagoon is an open type lagoon with an extensive sea-front (~ 15Km). Phytobenthos covered much of its shallow bottom comprised by macrophytes (Rytiphlaea tinctoria, Valonia aegagropila) as well as angiosperms (Cymodocea nodosa). Temperature and salinity had the most distinct seasonal differentiation with increased values during summer. The macrofauna and abiotic parameter data was subjected to single-factor (S, N, Shannon-Wiener H'), multiparametric analyses (MDS, BioEnv) and also to distribution correlation methods and correlations of similarity (ANOSIM, SIMPER). The M-AMBI index was applied and the diversity was compared between two, three and five replicates. Analysis for the two-replicate macrofaunal matrix showed high number of species (S = 151 species) and high diversity values (H '), higher than those measured in other Greek lagoons. The H’ index had a positive correlation with the vegetation dry mass. Anosim analysis showed that the macrobenthic fauna of the whole lagoon differs mostly spatially than seasonally. Strong marine influence was observed on macrobenthic communities as one third of them were marine species with preference for shallow areas. The remaining were typical lagoonal species (Abra segmentum and Microdeutopus gryllotalpa), opportunistic, and freshwater species. Dense vegetation supported greater functional diversity (more trophic and dwelling type groups) than the bare sediment habitats which showed higher level of trophic diversity only in July. Comparison between two, three and five replicate matrices, respectively, showed that species richness S increased but it had significant fluctuations in stations with high habitat patchiness. The M-AMBI index value also increased but in the cases with two and three replicates it underestimated the ecological quality status in stations with natural heterogeneity failing a clear distinction with a polluted station. In order to avoid low ecological indices’ values in lagoonal environments, it is proposed to review the typology and the extend of studied regions, and also consider the possible use of functional indices. To achieve this, future studies are necessary on the macrozoobenthos of the lagoons as well as on a higher-detailed mapping of their diverse habitats.
