Primary school children with conduct problems and children diagnosed with ADHD: Comparative approach
Summary:
Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to examine the existence of conduct problems in primary school and to investigate whether they are related to the appearance of ADHD.
Methodology:
The sample of the study consisted of 110 primary school children, aged 6-12, who either had symptoms that indicated appearance of ADHD, or were related to conduct problems, or had already been diagnosed with ADHD. The sample was selected through convenient sampling. Furthermore, the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment questionnaire and the ADHD-IV scale, were distributed to 110 primary school teachers, who were asked to evaluate the children's symptoms.
Results: The results showed that 97.4% of the children dealing with conduct problems had ADHD, while 52.9% of children with ADHD were dealing with conduct problems. In addition, it was found that boys have more conduct problems than girls, while the appearance of ADHD was not found to be related to the student's gender. Age did not appear to affect the appearance of conduct problems and ADHD. Furthermore, it was noticed that the majority of children dealing with conduct problems was identified by teachers having 11-20 years of service, while the minority was identified by teachers having more than 20 years of service. However, the years of service do not seem to affect teachers' perceptions on the appearance of ADHD.
Conclusion: Conduct problems seem to coexist with ADHD. In addition, boys seem to deal with more conduct problems than girls, while most children with conduct problems were identified by teachers with 11-20 years of service.
Discussion: It is recommended that further investigationcouldbe undertaken by obtaining a larger sample size, which would be representative of the general population.
