Investigating the relationship between education level and unemployment: the case of Greece
Summary:
Unemployment and education as well, are important and complex concepts with several parameters. They are two concepts that concern the whole world and what mainly interests people is the relationship that connects them in practice and in the modern labour market. Does obtaining education contribute significantly to reducing the incidence of unemployment? Is this true in general or on a case-by-case basis? Is it influenced by the level of education, the person, the time period, economic and social conditions? Does it vary from country to country? Do people with higher levels of education steadily increase the likelihood of remaining employed? These are significant questions of great interest to study and
draw conclusions.
The human factor is the combination of skills and education that gives value in the labour market. The more we know about the parameters that can lead to unemployment the better prepared we are to proceed to more appropriate study choices that will help each one of us to avoid as much as possible the probability of not finding a job.
The aim of this research is the study and record the factors which influence the relationship of labour market with education, the function that connects them, as well as the proposals that can improve this relationship. Through the study of these factors, it is estimated whether education finally influences positively or negatively the level of unemployment and in what way. The issue of the relationship of education with unemployment is particularly important both on a global level and in Greece, as it has a decisive influence on the social and economic life of the country. The study of this subject is of high importance because of its particular characteristics.
In Greece the characteristic of creating graduates who did not have the necessary qualifications, which the labour market needed and, at the same time, during the previous decade, different sectors were created which did not require the qualifications the candidates had obtained through their educations. On the other hand, in some cases, the labour market cannot absorb, utilize and retain the workforce in the country’s market, resulting in people leaving abroad.
The methodological approach includes the investigation of the relationship between employment and the level of education. In this parameter of the investigation, an overview and research on the situation will be made, mainly in Greece. The unemployment in relation to the level of education depending on the gender and the sector of activity will also be analyzed.
In order to come to safe conclusions, the bibliography that was used is derived from exclusively valid sources. For this reason official websites were used, which include statistical data and tables that have derived from research on the subject we are studying.
