“The contribution of the leader-principal to teachers’ professional development and the creation of learning communities”
Summary:
An economy- and knowledge-based society, as well as international educational developments are pushing schools and teachers to change and redefine their role. The need to improve the quality of educational work has influenced the identity of the teacher, according to which he or she must continuously develop knowledge and skills. The role of the leader/director is particularly important as it can influence teachers' professional development and create a culture of learning. The purpose of this quantitative research is to explore the views of teachers of public secondary schools in the Prefecture of Attica regarding the contribution of the principal in their professional development and the creation of learning communities. This year has seen significant changes in schools in improving the education system with the factors of self-evaluation, professional development, learning communities, and the leader/principal all taking centre stage. This research has examined the existing professional development in schools, the degree of teachers' participation in activities, their needs, the enhancement of their skills and the role of the principal in the whole process. The results showed the increased needs of teachers for professional development and their participation in collaborative practices. In school leadership, the participative style and distributive form is predominant. The principal has a vision and is able to create learning communities. Rewards, motivation, innovation, and empathy are all elements that he/she needs to develop more.
