Mother tongue as a factor addressing the school leakage of Roma pupils in primary education: Empirical research
Summary:
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the factors that affect the attendance of Roma students at school by enhancing school dropout and the use of their mother tongue as a factor limiting this leakage.
For this research we focused on primary education teachers who worked during the survey either in pure school units with Roma students or in mixed school units. The sample of teachers includes a sample of Spanish teachers also from Primary Education who participated in the survey during the participation in an ERASMUS + program.
The method used is quantitative research in order to highlight the percentage and correlations regarding the factors that cause the leakage. The research tool used to collect the survey data is the questionnaire.
The thesis consists of two parts: in the first part of the research an approach is made on the theoretical framework and literature on the importance of the mother tongue in teaching a second language, and in the second part follows the research carried out, the presentation of the data, the findings per research hypothesis are presented and it is completed with the presentation of the research findings.
According to the teachers' responses, their views on the causes of school dropout are formed according to their specialty, their years of experience in education, their age, their studies, but also the number of their Roma students in their classroom and training. Our research shows that the opinions of teachers are not influenced by their gender.
