Internet addiction, its relationship with stress, self-esteem and the mediating role of adherence to the med-diet in a sample of Greek adolescents
Summary:
Adolescence is a critical period, during which insufficient mental development can lead to non beneficiary decisions. These in their turn may lead to unsuccessful management of the biologically and socially increased stress of adolescence, poor emotional control, and burdened lifestyle choices. Research has highlighted the link between stress and internet addiction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and stress levels in a Greek adolescent population, while secondary objectives were to examine the relationship between internet addiction, self-esteem, and Mediterranean diet. Following the approval of the research protocol, an observational study was conducted to investigate internet addiction, stress levels, self-esteem, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet in adolescent secondary school students in the prefecture of Attica. The questionnaires administered were the Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Adolescent Stress Questionnaire (ASQ), the Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale, and the KIDMED. The study sample included 503 adolescents (51.3% girls, mean age 15.02 ± 1.98 years). The total IAT score was statistically significantly related to all subscales of the ASQ questionnaire (p <0.0001) in a positive manner (correlation coefficients ranges r = 0.244-0.354). The overall IAT score showed a negative statistically significant correlation with self-esteem (r = -0.221, p = <0.0001), and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (r = -0.231, p <0.0001). During adolescence, stress and internet addiction are interrelated, while self-esteem and adherence to the Mediterranean diet are negatively related. Health prevention and promotion programs within the educational environment can prevent and reverse the effects of this behavioral addiction.
