Assessing the relationship between forest fires and the climate crisis in Mediterranian forests
Summary:
Every summer we experience more and more devastating forest fires, especially in countries with mediterranean climate. This master thesis examines the correlation between the "climate crisis" and forest fires in the mediterranean forests. The purpose is to study the way in which, this phenomenon is evolving and the reasons why it has intensified.
Fact is, that the climate change rate is getting faster due to reckless human activity. This is not only confirmed by the increase of the average on temperature by +1.5 οC, but also by the extreme weather phenomena, that includes intense heat waves, droughts, severe storms and sudden floods. Economy, politics and social life are affected as well at a global scale.
In order to restrict the climate crisis, drastic solutions must be taken immediately. Turning to "green energy” and "green economy” is a way to contribute to this situation, but it is not enough, as with the current technology we can’t completely replace the existed the environmentally harmful forms of energy.
The most immediate and advantageous solution for mitigating the climate crisis are the forests, which are endangered in recent years. Mediterranean forests in particular are more vulnerable, as they suffer from a new form of fire. This type of fire, spreads quickly and has the ability to burn very large areas in a short time. The cause of these fires is the combination of the effects caused by the climate crisis. The highest temperatures throughout the years, the hottest days starting in May and lasting until October, as well as the prolonged heat waves, do not help the vegetation to have the appropriate moisture, as a result of which it is converted into fuel. Therefore, there are three essential elements for the occurrence of fires, which are the temperature, the fuel and the oxygen present in the atmosphere.
