Comparison of embryo development resulting from in vitro fertilization IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection ICSI
Summary:
In most fertility treatments (IVF and ICSI), the oocytes retrieved are fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. The fertilized oocytes are then cultured in the lab for a few days before being transferred as fresh embryos into the woman's uterus. In order to have good quality embryos and a good chance of pregnancy, it is important that the embryos are cultured in an undisturbed environment, meaning keeping temperature and oxygen levels stable.
For this purpose, Time-lapse technology (TLT) systems are used to facilitate the monitoring of embryos. In time-lapse systems, images of the embryo's development are recorded at regular intervals and compose a short video.
This retrospective study involved patients who had at least 6 embryos resulting from IVF or ICSI and proceeded to blastocyst culture and day 5 transfer, during the years 2019 and 2020, at the Department of Obstrectics and Gynaocology (Gennima), Athens. The study is 100% time-lapse and focuses on the culture of all embryos in the Embryoscope+.
All patients had controlled ovarian stimulation with either agonist or antagonist protocol. Follicles were activated using recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and oocytes were retrieved 35 hours after activation. Fertilization of the oocytes was done either by IVF or ICSI depending on the quality of the sperm. Fertilization check was performed 16-18 hours after IVF or ICSI and the fertilized oocytes were incubated in the Embryoscope+ where they remained for 5 days until embryo transfer or cryopreservation.
The aim of the study is to compare the developmental potential of embryos reaching the blastocyst stage according to the fertilization technique (IVF or ICSI) used and the pregnancy rate achieved.
