Art and technology: Approaching the artistic work of Natalia Melas and Takis
Summary:
Exploring the relationship between technology and contemporary art was at the heart of this dissertation. The motivation for choosing the topic was the personal interest in the artistic creation, in combination with the nature of my basic academic studies and their relevance to technology.
The main purpose of the research is to investigate and highlight the role of technology in contemporary sculpture, and more specifically in the work of Takis and Natalia Mela, in terms of inspiration, tool or means of expression and technical choices. In the context of a more complete understanding of their work, not only an aesthetic approach was attempted, but also a multifaceted interpretation of their morphological choices and the shaping of their artistic identity in specific space-time conditions.
The further aim was to correlate the work of the two creators, as well as to highlight the deeper causes of their artistic experiments and achievements. The reference point of the research was the artwork of Natalia Mela and Takis as both marked the course of modern sculpture.
Through the analysis, composition and interpretation of their artistic idiom, an attempt was made to approach the two contemporary artists with different artistic and philosophical views, but also at the same time with essential points of convergence. The collection of information and digital resources, bibliographic resources and articles, although it presented particular limitations and concerns, was the essential basis and framework for the foundation and progress of research, together with the observation and study of works of the two artists.
Throughout the phases of the research process, key elements emerged regarding the synergy of technology and art, as well as the indirect but obvious presence of science. In addition, the evolutionary course of the research, in the context of a broader goal setting, highlighted various aspects of the functions of the artwork as an autonomous entity, but also as a modern educational tool. Thanks to the conjunctural selection of the two artists with differences and similarities in their creative career, it became possible to highlight the contribution of their artistic work in the educational process through specific proposals.
The present thesis with its original elements of study may be the basis for an even deeper research on a holistic view of human activity and creation in the artistic, humanistic, technological and scientific fields.
