Length of stay of patients admitted to the Emergency Department of a Provincial Hospital
Summary:
Introduction: The emergency department (ED) is a space available to the population 24 hours a day and serves an unscheduled patient population with anticipated needs for urgent care.
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the length of stay of patients in the emergency department of a provincial hospital.
Material and Method: The data collection tool was the questionnaire - recording form. It consists of two sections. The first section concerns socio-demographic data (gender, age, educational level, mode of transport) and the second section concerns medical information. Specifically, the participants are asked to answer about the vital signs, the history of consciousness, the health history, the taking of medicines, the type of tests carried out and the course of the patient. The research was conducted on 400 participants in provincial hospitals of Laconia. A sample of 400 people was collected from November 2021 to January 2022. After completing the questionnaires, they were collated and entered into the spss 25 statistical program. The data analysis was performed with the IBM SPSS 25 statistical program. The statistical analysis chosen is descriptive statistics where tables and charts are presented to present statistical data.
Results: The length of stay in the TEP area reached 106 minutes with an average of ± 48 minutes.
Conclusions: Emergency department length of stay starts from admission to the department and does not end until the patient is either discharged home, admitted to the hospital, or transferred to another institution. Nevertheless, the better organization of these departments is recommended in order to improve the quality of the health of individuals through the timely, efficient and optimal screening and management of cases that visit the EDs of a hospital, especially a provincial one.
