Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Quartets for Keyboard, Flute, and Viola (Wq. 93-95): analysis of a late set of chamber music works
Summary:
The subject of the present thesis is Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s quartets Wq. 93-95 / H. 537-539 for flute, viola, and keyboard, written in Hamburg during the last year of his life (1788). After the presentation of the basic historical data that surround these works, an analytical / formal approach of their movements follows, through the prism of contemporary music theory (Hepokoski & Darcy, Caplin), as well as that of 18th century (especially Koch’s, but also Galeazzi’s and Forkel’s). Finally, with the exception of one movement, based on rondeau form, sonata form presents itself in the eight remaining movements of the current set. What follows, as a result, is a comparative examination of these movements, through which conclusions are drawn from the tonal and thematic planning of the individual, large-scale units of the form, as well as from the composer’s choices regarding the organization of his music material in a small-scale level.
