Market value and effectiveness of teams in the Superleague 1 during the period 2011/12- 2021/22
Summary:
The purpose of this research is to study the market value of players at the level of the league and teams of Super League 1 for the seasons 2011-12 to 2021-22. The data was collected from the Transfermarkt database and the analysis focused on the evolution of the market value over time and its correlation with the teams' effectiveness. The results for the level of total market value of the league reveal that despite the rise of European football during this period, the Greek league, apparently, could not follow, which explains the downward trend of the teams in the European championships. Possible causes are the country's economic crisis and the inefficient management of football as a product by the teams and the organizing authority. There are huge differences in market value between the top four and all the other teams, which explains the low competition for the top places and as a result the Greek league seems to gain interest from the 5th place onwards. The team with the greatest market value was Olympiacos, with a difference followed by PAOK while at a considerable distance follow the teams of AEK and very closely Panathinaikos. Olympiacos and PAOK have a market value much greater than that required to win the first and second place respectively. A possible reason could be the expectation of these teams for competitive success in European competitions where teams with much higher market value compete.
A very high positive correlation (r=0.917, p=0.000) was found between the market value and the effectiveness overall in the event and in general at the championship level. This means that teams with higher market value will also have better effectiveness on the field. Although the results for the 2014/15 championship indicate a relatively lower degree of correlation (r=0.604, p=0.004) between the two variables, there were no overturns in the top four positions.
