Summary:
This dissertation examines the impact of Greek palingenesis on Italian literature in the 19th century and then focuses on the influence of the historical figure of Marcos Botsaris on Italian scholars and poets. Three lyrical tragedies are in the spotlight. The first is a four-act one, by the Zakynthian composer Pavlos Carrer with libretto by Giovanni Caccialupi, titled "Marco Botzaris". Ιt was first performed in Italian, in Patras in 1866. Its plot was based on the Greek revolution of 1821, a theme that inspired great writers from all over Europe to also write about it and thus contribute to the ideal of freedom. The second is the five-act tragedy "Marco Bozzari" by the Italian lawyer and author Tommaso Zauli Sajani (1802 – 1872), published in 1865, in Florence. Zauli Sajani was an ardent patriot, Botsaris stood for him as a source of inspiration and a model for the Italian unification, while his tragedy was a huge success. The plot of the play is based on real historical events, a fact that is reflected in the characters of the play. The third work we will deal with is the five-act tragedy ‘’Marco Bozzari’’ by the Italian writer, librettist and poet Antonio Somma, published in Trieste in 1847. The plot of this tragedy is based on true facts, which are testified by starring persons.
