Methods of creating a vaccine against COVID-19 and the cost of its production
Summary:
Introduction: Despite the fact that there are hundreds of clinical trials that began with the outbreak of COVID-19, by the end of 2020 no antiviral drug effective in all patient groups had been developed and evaluated. Therefore, the need to vaccinate the entire population against the SARS-CoV-2 virus was considered necessary and urgent and vaccination was considered the most effective way to control the pandemic.
Purpose: The purpose of this work is to make as complete a record as possible of new data on COVID-19 vaccine development methods and production costs.
Methodology: Searches were performed in the PubMed, Embase and Google scholar search engines, in the period June - July 2021. The search included a combination of various terms in Greek and English, in order to identify and display articles that would be as close as possible to its subject research.
Results: The search yielded 230 articles, of which 95 were considered as eligible sources from the title and summary presented for information on COVID-19 vaccine development methods and production costs. The most common reason for excluding an article from any further consideration was the lack of combination of original data and the inability to access the full article.
Conclusions: The literature suggests that research and development schedules, indirect costs, sectoral correlation (ie, commercial versus non-commercial public or private sector) and vaccine manufacturers' licensing history, vaccine licensing history for a given multidisciplinary disease of platform technology are factors that contribute to the cost of vaccine research and development.
