The employment of drama as a strengthening self-esteem tool for female prisoners
Summary:
Self- esteem, as a broader concept of self, constitutes the subject for many psychological, scientific research throughout the decades, having as a result a positive impact on the person and society in general. The employment of drama on education seems that it can contribute in the strengthening of self-esteem to both juvenile and adult learners. However, it is not known in what extent the employment of drama on prisoners’ education in the context of a formal education inside the prison, with passages of tragedies, can reinforce self-esteem. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze if the employment of dramatic and theatrical elements on female prisoner’s education can strengthen their self-esteem levels.
A research of mixed methods has been carried out, which include pre-measuring
through Rosenberg scale for the assessment of self-esteem levels, a theatrical and
educational intervention trimester on an experimental group, based on drama
techniques by using passages of the ancient tragedy “Antigone”, and post-measuring
for the collection of the data. A comparison to another control group, which didn’t get
any intervention, has been included as well. The above searching format was completed
with the collection of qualitative data through semi-structural interviews from the
female prisoners, who participated in the activities of the experimental group in order
to be understood better the under-assessment intervention and to be pointed out the
elements of its effectiveness on female prisoners’ self-esteem.
According to the results, the preparation and the implementation of programs which
are based on drama, using specific passages of monologues and dialogues of ancient
tragedies, like Antigone- Ismene’s dialogue, Antigone-Kreontas’ dialogue, Kreontas-Emonas’ and Kreontas- Tiresias, as well as some other parts of the ancient tragedy, increases the levels of self-esteem of the female prisoners’ participants. The research has pointed out important elements, which arises from the prisoners’ contact with the ancient tragedy and the preparation of a performance inside the prison.
