"Lifelong learning and work performance of health professionals: a comparative study in the public and private sectors"
Summary:
Scope:
The purpose of this work is to expand the motivations and inhibiting factors-obstacles to participation or non-participation of health professionals/administrative staff in lifelong learning programs. Additional objectives are to determine the reported motivations and inhibiting factors-obstacles of health professionals/administrative staff employed in the public and private sectors, as well as the possible differences that may exist between the two target groups.
Methodology:
The present study is a descriptive, comparative, correlational study. The investigation of the issue is carried out through a combination of literature research and empirical study. The research sample consists of 227 health professionals/administrative staff working in public and private health units in Attica, of whom 119 are employed in the public sector and 108 in the private sector. Data collection is done by an anonymous self-completed questionnaire (05/05/2022-20/06/2022), consisting of the Reasons and Barriers to Participation Scale (PRB). To analyze the data is used the S.P.S.S 28 statistical program as well as statistical methods of descriptive and inductive statistics.
Results:
The Cronbach's Alpha coefficient for all propositions shows a level of reliability (a = .829), where it shows that the PRB Scale has internal consistency and reliability as a whole. The most important dimension of motivation for the participation of health professionals/administrative staff in the public sector is "Interest in Learning" (5.90±1.30), while in the private sector "Professional Upgrading" (5.50±1.70). The highest average score of the inhibiting factors of non-participation of public and private health professionals is recorded by the dimension "Institutional Obstacles" (3.14±1.39) and (2.95±1.41) respectively.
Conclusions
The most important motivational dimension for health professionals/administrative staff in the public sector is "Interest in Learning", while in the private sector "Professional Development". Regarding civil servants, the most important inhibiting factors are "Participation cost" and "There is a lack of information about Training programs" while for private employees "Participation cost" and "Lack of time due to work commitments". Research findings can help relevant agencies to implement policies for the benefit of professionals, healthcare organizations, patients, the economy and society as a whole.
