Summary:
This postgraduate thesis examines the ideas of 6th grade students about the Shape of the Earth, Gravity, Earth's Movements, the Structure of the Solar System, the Movements, Sizes and Distances of Planets from the Sun and between them. The sample is from students of Athens, specifically from the 8th Primary School of Kifissia, who had been taught, about three months before, the relevant modules in the context of the Geography lesson. Twelve 11-year-old students participated in the research. A semi-structured interview consisting of open-ended questions was used to elicit students' ideas. The students' verbal responses and their plans were examined and analyzed. The results showed that the children have learned that the Earth is a sphere, but they cannot support it with arguments against someone who would argue that the Earth is flat. For most students, Gravity is a vague concept. All the students in the sample know the term, but when they try to describe it, they formulate it in various unclear ways. Only one is aware that the bottom is the center of the Earth. Still a good percentage of students differentiate between Gravity on Earth and in Space. The students seem to have memorized the knowledge about the movements of the Earth, without really understanding it. Most students do not realize the distance relationships between the planets and the planets and the Sun and do not seem to know the differences in the sizes of the planets. All the children in the sample know that all the planets move with the largest percentage knowing their movements. Most of the students in the sample seem not to have mastered the knowledge regarding the structure of the Solar System.
